Tim Horton's Club Championship 2012

September 3, 2012

A total of 78 participants teed off starting at 8:00 last labour day. Since 2008, the Tim Horton Club Championship in memory of John Dubien is now held on the civic Holiday.  And since last year, Kevin Dubien (from Tim Horton's) wanted this event to include the name of his father to it.  He added a new trophy for the Ladies and with John "overlooking" the annual event, showed everyone that anyone can and should play in a club championship, like John would have done every year.  See, you don't have to be an excellent golfer to play in such an event, playing in a club championship should be about, yes, friendly competition but it is also about measuring yourself VS the golf course.  To see if you can actually play to your ability and try to beat your average score under a little bit of pressure.  You have to play it not on any given day, but on the day of the Championship, regardless of the weather.

The weather was looking good until a few days before the event, when the forever changing forecast took a turn in what we all thought was the wrong direction: it did not look good for a while, but after a bit, we got lucky as the precipitations missed us and again went around the golf course.  Many participants were checking the radar from the tee time computer in the pro shop to try and prepare for what might come our way.  Around 1:20 it was a certainty that we were going to get through it all with only 20 seconds of raindrops. (see radar picture below).

Well after the first 9 holes, everything seemed to be in place for "veteran" Flo Duclos. He had just shot a 2-under 34 and this being an 18-hole championship, was on his way to his first.  But not so fast...

Lurking behind and unaware of the scores shot on the front 9, was Yves Barbeau.  The only players that knew about Flo's 34 was Flo and maybe some of his playing partners.

Well remember that pressure I mentioned earlier, it kind of got to our friend Flo, who at the end finished up his round with a 44 on the last 9-hole giving him a total of 78, 1 shot behind Yves who followed his even par-36 with a 41 for a 77.  Dan Piché had a slow start with a 41 and finished with a strong 37, but fell 1 shot short.  Congratulations to Yves on his first win, he will be looking at trying to repeat in 2013.  Rounding up the event were: Rick Bartlett (B Winner), Marc Dagenais with a 79!!
(C Winner) and Robert Lebreton (D Winner).

On the ladies side, absolutely no one knew anyone's scores.  The secret was so well kept, even though it was not done on purpose, that when I announced the winners name, she was more surprised that any ladies present.  Thinking her score was not worth the title.  She soon realized that she had won her second club championship title in the last 5 years.  Sylvie Leclerc had a bad first-9 (48) but managed to keep it afloat on the back-9 (41), to finish 6 shot ahead of her nearest rival.  Rounding up the event: Lise Labelle (B Winner), Nicoel Brzela (C Winner) and Lorraine Ratté (D Winner).
Congratulations to all!

2012 Junior Club Championship

After rescheduling this event more than once, it finally got played last Sept 2.
Winning his second junior title and the privilege of playing in the Bob Young Invitational in 2013 was Nick Lalande.
Nick had a slow start but managed to finish with a strong 37 on the back 9 to take the title.
Participation was a problem this year but the weather was at the origin of the first re-schedule but nevertheless,
these Junior golfers showed determination and commitment to play in the event.
Thanks for participating!
